The cultivation of hemp for fiber was recorded in China as early as 2800 BC. C. and was practiced in the Mediterranean countries of Europe at the beginning of the Christian era, spreading to the rest of Europe during the Middle Ages. Hemp, or industrial hemp, is a botanical class of Cannabis sativa cultivars that are specifically cultivated for industrial or medicinal use.

In the Australian states of Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales and, more recently, South Australia, state governments have issued licenses to grow hemp for industrial use.
